| Huka Falls |
|
New Zealand’s most visited
natural attraction. The mighty Waikato River
rushes at 250,000 litres per second through
a narrow chasm and over the Huka Falls.
The volume of water is equivalent to two
Olympic size swimming pools per second. |
|
| Craters of
the Moon (45 minute walk) |
An
active geothermal field. The terrain is
filled with exposed steam vents and is constantly
shifting, collapsing and reforming, giving
an uninhabited appearance. Thermal mud pools
bubble away and plants not normally native
to our area, thrive in this hot and partly
noxious environment |
|
| Aratiatia Dam
& Rapids |
The
Aratiatia Rapids are about 10 kilometres
north of Taupo and at specific times each
day spill gates from the dam are opened
at the top of the Aratiatia rapids and the
narrow gorge fills with turbulent water
surging past. There are several excellent
vantage points on the high rock bluffs that
dominate this turbulent stretch of the river.
At Aratiatia the Waikato River falls naturally
through 28 metres in the space of one kilometre
and this natural drop has been harnessed
for environmentally-sustainable hydroelectric
power. |
